Week 11
Although the election was the clear attention grabber for the evening, we were able to determine our school district, look for school data, and discuss James Banks' approaches to multicultural education.

For Week 12: I would like to discuss Chapter 8 from Nieto. Please bring the text.
Due Tuesday: Don't forget to bring a copy of your Personal History of Otherness assignment to class. Also, submit the electronic version to webCT.

Week 10
Week 10 was a great class. I really enjoyed the creativity of the groups, the awesome bumper stickers and I really enjoy that fact that we have access to so many computers that we can use Google Docs on a regular basis! As always, the conversation was lively and interesting. . .thanks.
Don't forget that we discuss the School Diversity Assignment and I expect that you will have your groups and the district that you wish to investigate. . .Also, you should be thinking about ways you can get involved with the school you target for support.
Week 11: Election night!! We will discuss the reading that I emailed everyone through webCT, the Banks chapter. . .Please don't forget to print and bring to class. I will also discuss how to use the California Department of Education's website for researching the schools you pick!!
I am having trouble uploading the PowerPoint to Slideshare, but I hope to have it up soon!

Week 9
We had a special guest this evening, Dr. Anne Rene Elsbree, who did an outstanding job leading the discussion and activities for how to disrupt hompophobia.
If you wanted to look at the wiki she created, that included the PSAs from GLSEN, click here
I hope everyone walked away from class with a new awareness of the issue and some strategies to disrupt homophobia in your classrooms (and your personal lives).
For week 10, we will be using Nieto's chapter 3 and the Grant & Sleeter reading from the course reader. Please bring your text to class and your copy of the Grant & Sleeter reading.
Also, I will go over the School Diversity Assignment.

Week 5: If All Kids Can Learn, Can All Teachers Teach Them?
It is always a challenge for me to keep to a tight schedule, especially when I feel a bit of passion about the subject ;-) I apologize for those groups who did not get to present their topic. . .I hope you can read the matrix and participate on the discussion board.
Thanks for all your participation and for being willing to express your ideas and questions, even when they are not the most popular. I want to encourage everyone to push your limits and to step out of your comfort zone when we are having class discussions.
You all have two weeks to get your Spring chapters together. I believe I have at least checked-in with most groups. I will return on Wed, and will be very available by email or phone if you have any questions.
I am also going to embed the matrix from chapter 5 for those who couldn't access the link!

Week 4: What's Your Personal History?
I will add a link to the wiki soon. . .and I promise to get these posted much earlier!!
Phew, I have finished some of the wiki (check out the link on the right!). I want to again thank everyone for their help in getting the material for the wiki together. I will show the wiki in class tomorrow.
In week 4 we also picked groups for the Spring book!! If you look in the discussion board on WebCt, you will see that I have posted everyone's name following the chapter in the Spring Discussion space. . .I think only Anne and Elizabeth need to find their groups.
Reading for week 5: most importantly, Nieto, Chapter 5; also read the Grant and Sleeter chapter from the course reader. We will probably only have time to discuss Nieto, as I will give the groups some time to collaborate.

Week 2: Introduction to Priviledge
Sorry it took me a few days to post this. . .
In class tonight we did two SDAIE activities that helped process the readings for the week. The first activity was a Give One, Get One activity with chapter one from Neito. The second activity was something we can call, Making an Appointment, where we made appointments with peers, then discussed a specific quote or idea from "Black and White," a chapter from Robert Jensen. For some students, tonight was an introduction to white privilege and anti-racism. I hope that everyone was able to grow this evening.
For next week, Tuesday, Sep 9, you should read Neito, chapter 4 and also chapter 2 from Beverly Tatum (which can be found on webCt). We will work with chapter 4, discuss Neito and also the Personal History of Otherness assignment.
Don't forget to post on the discussion board and complete your reading logs!

Week 1: Getting Startled
The first week is always a bit rushed. Issues always come up, rooms are often changed, and time always seems to run out. . . .
We were able to get through the syllabus, discuss the assignments, and do our first activity: Expert Group Jigsaw! I hope everyone enjoyed the opportunity to interact with his/her peers.
For next week: you need to buy the Neito book and read chapters one and two. You also need to download the Robert Jensen article, "Black and White" from WebCt. The reading journal will be either on the Nieto readings or Jensen (see PowerPoint for instructions). Also, you should login to webCT and post your response on the discussion board (see webCT for instructions) and respond to at least two peers' posts.
I will post any PowerPoint that we use in class. . .Here's week 1.
